Sweet Melissa Sundays (On Wednesday) – Black Bottom Brownies

Sorry for the late SMS submission. This week’s recipe was selected by Cynthia of BakingTherapist. I have to admit when I first saw the selection, I planned on skipping it because I’m just not that into chocolate. This recipe’s saving grace was the cheesecake top. I’ve never met a cheese I didn’t like. Hence, cheesecake is up there in a three-way tie for my favorite desserts alongside strawberry shortcake and carrot cake. So I figured, if I didn’t like the chocolate bottom, I could always chuck it.
The recipe called for these brownies to be topped with chocolate chips but I opted for a (lame) first-time attempt to add a chocolate swirl. Didn’t come out horrible but I definitely need more practice swirling.
Overall, these brownies were good if you like the moist, fudgy kind. And of course, I thought the cheesecake top was excellent. I would definitely try these again and next time, get better swirl action on top and maybe add walnut to the brownie bottom for texture. (or because I love nuts as much as I love cheese)
Make sure to check out Cynthia’s blog for the recipe or pick up a copy of The Sweet Melissa Baking Book.

Mmm… I love cheesecake brownies… and black-bottom cupcakes. I just made brownies earlier this week — if I hadn't, I'd be making these right away. I'm saving this idea for my next brownie craving!

I think the chocolate swirl on top and adding walnuts are both excellent ideas…when I make these brownies I'm doing it that way!! Peace, Stephanie

Your brownies look great! I skipped this one as it got mixed reviews… I'm with you on the cheesecake – love it. Though given the choice between cheesecake and brownies, brownies will win every time
My swirling attempts have not gone well, either…

Beautiful! I'm surprised you were able to taste the cheesecake layer. I thought it was really overwhelmed by the chocolate brownies below. I struggle with swirling too – it looks so easy yet just never turns out quite right for me

I have never tried these, but they look de-lish!

I do like the moist fudgy kind of brownie! This looks awesome. The cheesecake top is an added bonus. Very nice.

Om nom nom. These look delicious. I was just thinking I wanted something to go with my cup of tea – one of these would be perfect. Too bad I can't eat the picture

mmm yum, don't worry swirls are a hard thing to make, the thicker the batter the harder to swirl it

Yum… These brownies sound de-lish! I would probably eat the whole pan.

Beautiful brownies! And i have to say, I just read your wedding cake blog entry… brave, brave girl! I think my husband would have had a heart attack if I would have done that.
What a fun, picturesque wedding.

Great job on your brownies! I thought about sitting out too, but I'm so glad I didn't; these were fantastic!

I'm actually not a big fan of brownies because they look like condensed poop. But yours look terrific and entrancing with the two contrasting layers of colors!

ooh a walnut addition to these sounds good – it would add a whole 'other dimension of texture! great idea. PS – your swirling looks just fine to me!
