Maple Oatmeal Scones

What’s there not to like about Ina Garten when she churns out recipes like this one?  I know, I know – I have a huge bias because I HEART her.  But Ina and her fabulous life aside, her recipes speak for themselves.  She walks through her recipes with such ease on television that she makes anyone think they can reach the stars in the kitchen.

But what most people don’t realize is that miracles do not need to be realized for you to be able to make not just good food but superb food.  If you don’t believe that, watch a few episodes of Barefoot Contessa.  Ina Garten’s food is simple yet classy and elegant without being fussy – just like these scones.  No exotic ingrediants here.  Simply mix the dry, add in the butter (which has to be cold when making scones), add in the wet, roll out, cut into rounds, bake, glaze and you’re done.  And the result is anything but ordinary.

Over the last couple of months, a few of my blogging buddies wrote about these scones.  Thank goodness for them, because I almost left out the glaze on these.  You see, I’m not a glaze lover as most glazes are too sweet for my taste.  But thank goodness I paid attention to my blogger friends because the maple glaze on these scones was the best part.  Without it, these scones were good.  Once glazed, they were delectable.

Thanks for this winning recipe Ina.  Maybe one day I will be invited to one of your fabulous dinner parties.  I wonder what I’ll wear…maybe a white dress…it is the Hamptons :)

Maple Oatmeal Scones

From: The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook
Yield: 14 Servings

Ingredients:

For the Scones
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole-wheat flour
1 cup quick-cooking oats, plus additional for sprinkling
2 tablespoons baking powder
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 pound cold unsalted butter, diced
1/2 cup cold buttermilk
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
4 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk or water, for egg wash
For the Glaze
1 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the flours, oats, baking powder, sugar and salt.

Blend the cold butter in at the lowest speed and mix until the butter is in pea-size pieces. Combine the buttermilk, maple syrup and eggs and add quickly to the flour-and-butter mixture. Mix until just blended. The dough may be sticky. Dump the dough out onto a well-floured surface and be sure it is combined. Flour your hands and a rolling pin and roll the dough 3/4 to 1 inch thick. You should see lumps of butter in the dough.

Cut into 3-inch rounds with a plain or fluted cutter and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with egg wash. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the tops are crisp and the insides are done.

To make the glaze, combine the confectioners' sugar, maple syrup and vanilla. When the scones are done, cool for 5 minutes and drizzle each scone with 1 tablespoon of the glaze. I like to sprinkle some uncooked oats on the top, for garnish. The warmer the scones are when you glaze them, the thinner the glaze will be.

I remember watching this episode and thinking I needed to make the scones soon. It's been months and yet I still haven't baked them. Not sure what I'm waiting for but after all of the rave reviews I've read I know they're going to be amazing when I finally make them :) Yours look fabulous, especially that glaze!

I saw Ina make these and have seen a few bloggers, too. Yours look PERFECT. I just made scones this morning, too. Blueberry/Lime with white whole wheat flour and half and half instead of cream. They turned out SO good! I'm going to have to try these maple oatmeal scones!

Can I be your +1 if you get that invite to Ina's dinner party, Eliana? Mmmm… those scones look SO good! I have a basic cream scone recipe that's sort of my go to (I usually dress it up with some orange zest and dried cranberries), but this maple oatmeal is such a fantastic alternative. Yet another recipe added to my "must make list" from you! I seriously think you entice me to try more recipes than any other blogger!Hope you're doing well and having a great week. Miss hearing from you! <3,Joy
