Latin Flair Spotlight – Maria Cookies

The next time you need a cookie fix and don’t have time to make a batch of your own, head to your closest supermarket and grab a sleeve of Maria Cookies from the snack aisle.
These may look ordinary but the original/plain flavored Maria Cookies pictured here are far from that. They are thin, perfectly crisp and perfectly flavored with a hint of sweet caramel and vanilla in the background that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Maria Cookies are suitable for just about anything – dunking into tea or sweet coffee, sandwiched with ice cream, nutella, natilla or dulce de leche or as the perfect snack just on their own. And no Latino household goes without a couple of sleeves stashed away in the cupboard to serve with coffee for unexpected guests (or for hungry little girls that get late night cookie cravings).

Pakistanis love Maria biscuits. We are OCD when it comes to teatime and these biscuits are always an accompaniment!

LOL, once again I’m shown how lacking I am in closeness to my Puerto Rican roots. No, more I have you to show me the light. I’ll be picking up some Maria cookies, pronto!

I LOVE these. I’m going to get some when I go to the store. Everytime I have one, I can’t stop eating them. They’re so yummi. I grew up eating these with milk.

I am really fascinated by the popularity of these cookies around the world and the comments here prove it. I found your blog as I was writing my own story on Maria Cookies (annascozykitchen.com). Can you believe they have been around since 1874 and have pretty much kept their original look and taste. I love them. So light and delicate but full of flavor.

They sell these at Safeway in Seattle, WA.
I’ve also heard they sell a gluten-free version, but I’m not sure if they’re available on the west coast.
