Latin Flair Spotlight and Giveaway – Daisy’s Holiday Cooking

You all know I have tons of love for Chef Daisy Martinez and interviewing her earlier this year was a true privilege and honor. Back then I learned that on the heels of publishing her second cookbook, Daisy: Morning, Noon and Night she was already working on the manuscript for her third, Daisy’s Holiday Cooking, which was released just a couple of weeks ago.
What I love most about Daisy is the authenticity she brings to Latino cooking. Whether you come from the Caribbean, Central America, South America or Spain, Daisy manages to capture the true and varied flavors of Latino cuisine in easy to follow sassy recipes that pack an intense flavor punch.
In her new book, Daisy shares for favorite crowd pleasers that will add a dash of Latin Flair to your holiday cooking all the way from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. What’s different about this book is that it not only offers fun user-friendly recipes, but also groups them together by menus, ten in all, each with a theme. Every menu comes with a complete preparation schedule and plenty of tips on what can be made hours, days or even several weeks ahead of the party without sacrificing quality.
This season, there’s no need to fear or dread holiday entertaining. With Daisy’s Holiday Cooking to guide and inspire, you can minimize last-minute kitchen craziness and join in the fun of creating memories while delighting and impressing friends and family.
Thanks to the book’s publisher, I have a copy of it to give to one of you! To enter in the drawing, simply leave a comment letting me know your favorite holiday tradition. This giveaway is only open to U.S. residents (sorry). You have until Sunday, November 21, 12pm Eastern to enter. Make sure to include your email address so that I have a way to contact you if you win.
The winner will be announced on Sunday, November 21 when I will also share a sweet treat with you all from the book.
Buen Provecho

Daisy is awesome and what a great giveaway! I like Daisy a lot because her recipes aren’t overwhelming yet always turn out beautifully. This book wold be a fun way to learn more about Latino cooking and tradition. Love it!
My favorite holiday tradition is spending Xmas day in San Francisco, exploring union square with the kids and seeing the huge tree, then back to our hotel for some incredible room service and shopping the next day. We could stay there forever!

Oh wow, nice prize! Our thanksgiving is past, but for Christmas, my Mom & I get together to bake all our Christmas cookies. We get together, bake, and divide all the goodies at the end of the day. Unfortunately, since we moved further away last year, it was the first year we didn’t do this since I got married. Maybe it’ll work out this year though, we’ll see.
JoVonn — November 17, 2010 @ 11:07 am
My favorite tradition is Christmas Eve dinner. It started off as my mom cooking and now I cook the entire meal.
Rosa — November 17, 2010 @ 11:13 am

Cheers,

What a wonderful giveaway! I LOVE latin food!
One of our traditions is to have a Bohemian inspired meal for Christmas—roast pork, grandma’s dumpling recipe, sauerkraut and grandma’s Poppyseed cake. This has been a tradition since I was a little girl and now I get to prepare it every year. It’s one of those meals that you never can get enough of. Delicious!
Amy (Sing For Your Supper) — November 17, 2010 @ 12:21 pm
Wow, she looks amazing on the cover- so glam and classy!! What a great giveaway!! Thank you!
My favorite holiday tradition is the day after Thanksgiving- my husband and I get out the Christmas tree and all our Christmas decorations, listen to Christmas music, eat Thanksgiving leftovers and decorate all day long. It’s my absolute favorite day of the year!
Sarah — November 17, 2010 @ 12:35 pm
I am originally from Chicago and a semi-large family. We all would cook the huge family dinner together (aunts, uncles, the works). Now we live all over the country and I just moved back to the states. My husband is Mexican and they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving there. This book would help us include some “latin flair” to our meal. Hopefully we will be able to get the big family back together next year so he can see how a real Thanksgiving is prepared!

Will love to have the book!!!!
First thing that comes to my mind is a whole pig roasting outside and all of us kids just stonish at the view. Music , fresh air and everyone just so happy!!! That’s how my family spends “Las Navidades” en Puerto Rico. I miss that so much
Jeannette — November 17, 2010 @ 1:01 pm
what a neat giveaway! my favorite tradition is having christmas dinner around 10pm on christmas eve and then opening gifts at midnight and playing with our things in the wee hours of the morning
Jennifurla — November 17, 2010 @ 1:18 pm
My favorite food tradition is the heft pot of sausage gravy I make for a huge buttered bisquits.

My favorite holiday tradition is decorating the house with several trees, garland, wreaths, and other holiday items. It’s lots of work, but it really puts me in the festive spirit!
Jennifer — November 17, 2010 @ 2:40 pm
My favorite holiday tradition started with my mother, who makes cinnamon roll wreaths for all her neighbors. Now I make about 15 cinnamon roll wreaths tea-rings) for all my neighbors. Lots of work, but I love doing it.
Bonnie — November 17, 2010 @ 3:51 pm

Okay do Hispanics really do things with a just a “dash”? I’m thinking this book would add a boatload of Latin Flair to entertaining.
My favorite holiday tradition has been our Christmas Eve (Santa’s gifts) gift wrapping. Once Joe & I get Santa’s gifts wrapped we have to quietly sneakily get them under the tree. We’re hating the creaking wooden flours we put in a few years ago.
Every year Joe says we’re not doing it and we still wind up with some gifts to wrap and sneak out. lol
You get a bonus, my second fave tradition is taking the kids to see “snow” in Celebration. While there we always eat NY style pizza under the stars by the lake and dessert is roasted nuts. Some years we take Santa’s train ride, visit Santa (& get our picture taken), or go for a horse drawn carriage ride.
Sorry, I’m long winded today.

sweet! count me in please
my favorite holiday tradition is on thanksgiving after we all can’t breathe from overfill of ham (no turkey. i know, we’re weird. there was a deep fried turkey incident once that no one wants to relive) and fixins, the family watches national lampoon’s christmas vacation and elf together. good times.

My favorite tradition during the holidays is making coquito. I always make it every year.
Jamie — November 18, 2010 @ 10:19 am
I’m with Rosa, it’s always a shame when giveaways as great as this are only open to those in the US. And if our mom lives there? I love holidays but being in a mixed marriage (both religious and nationality) instead of celebrating more we celebrate less. That means Hanukkah which I adore: the potato pancakes served sizzling hot and scooped up with tangy, fruit homemade applesauce in the glow of the candles, the exchange of gifts for 8 nights, always wondering what is coming, but I always love the city sparkling with Christmas decorations and the streets filled with holiday music which is always piped in all day and all night for weeks. I love it!
Raquelle — November 18, 2010 @ 11:33 am
Thank you so much for this opportunity! I love Daisy Martinez.
My favorite holiday food tradition is eating octopus salad with my parents on Christmas. I know it sounds weird but it’s kind of a Portuguese-American thing to do. I’d love to start some Latin traditions for the holidays to honor my Dominican side too. I’m sure this book would be a great start!
Rachel — November 18, 2010 @ 12:10 pm
Love Daisy! She is a true inspiration!
Vanessa — November 18, 2010 @ 12:24 pm

Arlene — November 18, 2010 @ 12:28 pm
I love Daisy! Met her @ a book signing in NY and she is just wonderful. My family’s favorite holiday tradition is simply getting together w/family on Christmas Eve. Each year, we take turns hosting and we all pitch in w/the cooking and desserts and drinks, etc. I’m so happy that thanks to Daisy, over the past few years, I’ve been able to make a Cmas Eve pernil and some coquito! Would love to have Daisy’s holiday book to help me for when it’s my turn to host the family! Thank you!
Dana — November 18, 2010 @ 12:39 pm
My favorite is decorating the whole house! Tho it used to be making dozens of different kinds of cookies with my Mom, also Going Caroling!

I need some Latin flair in my life. And if I can’t have a latin lover…and you are going to insist on staying married to your husband… (:P) Well then I suppose i will need to get this book!
Addie Corn — November 18, 2010 @ 3:27 pm
I make a huge fish dinner on Christmas Eve and invite everyone we know.
After we eat, my son and his musician friends take to the living room and they play some incredible jazz.
While they are playing, I put out all the desserts I’ve baked.
We wait for midnight to arrive and we all exchange gifts.
No one leaves empty handed.
We’ve celebrated this way for 35 years and it’s just been for the past 2 years that we’ve added the jam session.
It’s one of, if not the best thing we do as a family.
Evelyn — November 18, 2010 @ 7:22 pm
One of my fondest memories of a holiday tradition, was getting together with my mom and grandma, and preparing Puerto Rican Pasteles. It was usually an all day event, and family members were always on the look out to see when we were going to be doing them. It was always a secret and my grandma would always freeze a small stash to give away to her sons. She never wrote down the recipe, as she said everything had to be by eye and adjusted as necessary.
Julie — November 18, 2010 @ 8:59 pm
What a great giveaway! Love Daisy! My favorite holiday tradition is making spritz cookies with my mom’s cookie press. Thanks for the chance to win.
The Duo Dishes — November 18, 2010 @ 9:28 pm
Haven’t seen Daisy Martinez in action, so it’d be nice to peep her book. The most fun thing is all the cooking of course, but the fact that the family gets suckered into helping putting up the Christmas tree is nice too.
Mija @ A Southern Diva — November 18, 2010 @ 11:03 pm
WOW I love Viva Daisy
My favorite holiday tradition is my husband and I along with all of our children wear matching pj’s Christmas Eve. Now that our children are grown and raised and live all over the world I still send them ( and the spouses and grandbabies ) matching pj’s to wear every Christmas Eve so we all feel together even if we’re thousands of miles apart.

I love the holidays. My overall favorite this is spending time with my family. My grandmother is 88 years-old and in poor health. We’re all very blessed to spend another Christmas with her, including my 2 boys.

I grew up in a small family where holiday meals were pretty low key. now that I’m married, I enjoy an “open door policy” holiday where all are welcome to join! the theme is always the more the merrier.

Being Swiss, we have the usual European traditions. We always try to incorporate something from another country in some way or another though. It helps us to remember the diversity of this country and how happy we are for the contributions from all peoples and cultures that make this a most interesting and wonderful place to live!
Helen — November 20, 2010 @ 9:52 pm
Married a Latino. Love their traditions and food for the holidays. The entire family attends Midnight Mass and when we come home we place the baby Jesus in the Manger. Enjoy the lights on the tree while sipping Coquito !

Our tradition for Christmas Eve is to open our presents while eating sugar cookies and sipping on hot chocolate. On Christmas Day it is all about opening the presents that Santa brought! Thanks for a great giveaway.
Katrina — November 21, 2010 @ 1:00 am
One favorite holiday tradition we have is that we always pick one or two families–friends or neighbors to secretly do the 12 days of Christmas for. It’s really fun to sneak up and leave stuff on their door each night.
Donna — November 21, 2010 @ 7:18 am
What a fabulous giveaway!!
One of my most favorite traditions.. believe it or not.. is making my cookie trays to give away. Last year I made 26 different kinds and gave away over 15 trays:)
Linda Williams — November 21, 2010 @ 7:22 am
The family tradition is Plum Pudding with two sauces: hard and foamy. The pudding is steamed for 8 hours and made entirely by hand: labor intensive but I am carrying on the tradition! It is also delicious!
Donna — November 21, 2010 @ 10:43 am
My favorite holiday tradition is the gathering together of family that I don’t get to see nearly often enough, and of spending days prior to the actual holiday searching through cookbooks and blogs for new recipes as well as everyone’s traditional favorites. Pumpkin chiffon pie, my sister’s request for “green stuff” (Watergate salad she wouldn’t eat on any other day of the year), my brother’s macaroni salad recipe with fresh tomatoes and cheddar chunks, Mom’s Jello ribbon salad, the challenge of meatless dishes as tastes evolve – a happy, happy chore!
Yvette — November 24, 2010 @ 11:20 am
My favorite holiday tradition is just being together with familia. Cooking in the kitchen, laughing, talking, and reminiscing.

I am so glad to see we have so many things in common, including a love for Daisy. Reading the about section of A Chica Bakes makes me laugh as I can relate in so many levels with our experiences with growing up Dominican using ovens (not) and following recipes (no again) hahaha.
